Laser epilation

Laser hair removal for dark skin works when the laser can tell the hair from the skin around it. At Aime-toi in Montreal we use the InMode Triton's 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength for Fitzpatrick types IV to VI — brown, deep brown and black skin — because it reaches the hair follicle while largely passing through the melanin in your skin. Same prices as every other client, from $30 per session, and a free consultation first.

Laser hair removal on dark skin with the Nd:YAG Triton laser in Montreal

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?

Yes, with the right wavelength and settings. A retrospective study of 150 people with Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin found long-pulsed Nd:YAG hair removal safe and effective in dark-skinned individuals, with no complications in 86% of patients and every complication transient.

The risk with older single-wavelength lasers was real: a wavelength absorbed by skin melanin can cause burns or dark spots. That is why the American Academy of Dermatology notes that on dark skin, laser hair removal must be performed very carefully — and why the wavelength choice matters more than the brand name on the machine.

Which laser is best for dark or black skin?

The 1064 nm Nd:YAG. Its longer wavelength is absorbed far less by skin melanin than Alexandrite (755 nm) or Diode (810 nm), so the energy goes to the pigment in the hair follicle instead of the surface of your skin.

A 2025 study of 55 women with types IV–VI using a low-fluence 1064 nm Nd:YAG reported no adverse events and found skin type was not a significant factor in how many sessions were needed. The Triton carries all three wavelengths in one platform, rated by InMode for skin types up to VI, so you never get the wrong one because it was the only one in the room.

Will it cause dark spots or hyperpigmentation?

With Nd:YAG at the right fluence, pigmentation changes are uncommon and, when they occur, temporary. In the 150-patient study above, hyperpigmentation was the most frequent complication but all complications were transient.

We reduce the risk further by starting conservatively and testing a small patch at your consultation, and by asking you to stay out of the sun for two weeks before each session.

How many sessions does dark skin need?

Plan on the same range as everyone else — at Aime-toi, usually 6 to 8 sessions, 4 to 8 weeks apart. In the Nd:YAG studies, skin type did not significantly change the number of treatments; hair colour, thickness and the area treated matter more.

Coarse, dark hair on the face, underarms and bikini responds best; fine or light hair is the harder case regardless of skin tone, and we'll tell you so at the consultation.

Does laser hair removal for dark skin cost more?

No. Our prices depend on the area, not your skin tone: upper lip $50, underarms $55, Brazilian $150, full legs $200, packages from $155. The full list is on the laser hair removal prices page.

How do I prepare if I have dark skin?

Shave 24 hours before, no sun or self-tanner for two weeks, no waxing or plucking for four weeks. Tell us about any history of keloids, dark marks after injuries, or skin-lightening products — those change how we set the laser, not whether we can treat you.

Who will treat me?

A certified esthetician trained on the Triton, in a salon that clients describe as warm and inclusive. Aime-toi is a beauty salon, not a medical clinic; if something about your skin needs a dermatologist first, we'll say so.
